The Essential Guide to BIS Certificate: A Crucial Step for Product Quality and Compliance In today’s competitive business environment, it is crucial to ensure the quality and safety of your products. One way to achieve compliance with quality standards in India is by obtaining BIS registration, which stands for Bureau of Indian Standards registration. In this article, we will discuss the importance of BIS registration, its requirements, and how it can have a positive impact on your business.

BIS Registration

BIS registration is a certification that indicates a product’s compliance with the specific quality standards established by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The BIS is a government-established organization that aims to promote product quality and safety. This certification is particularly significant for products that have implications for health, safety, and the environment. The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (‘ LMA’) was introduced in order to safeguard consumer interests and rights. Effective April 01, 2011, LMA establishes and enforces standards for packaged products.

Legal Metrology Registration law is applicable to all packaged products which are manufactured/imported and sold in ‘packed form’ in the Indian market. Legal metrology registration can be applied in two capacities: Manufacturer/Packer Importer Products that pertain to the “weight & measures” category, like weighing machine and thermometer, fall under the category of Weights & Measure which needs to take four different registrations from the legal metrology registration department, i.e. Model Approval Packaged Commodity Registration Import License Dealership License Products that are not falling under the category of the “Weights & Measure Certificate” category need to take only the ‘Packaged Commodity Registration’ from the department. Model Approval Certificate: It is applicable only on products that fall underweight & measurement category. This model approval registration shall be granted by the Central Government. We need to submit the sample in the lab to test if it is according to Indian standards or not.

Packaged Commodity Registration: This is applicable to all the packaged commodities which are to be retailed to end consumers. Manufacturers/Importers need to provide relevant product information on packaged goods. This information needs to follow the guidelines defined in the rule. This Packaged Commodity Registration shall be granted by both state and central government. Import License: Once model approval is done, we have to apply for Import License for that approved model from the legal metrology registration department. This registration shall be granted by the state government where the goods will be imported.

Dealership License: If the importer is importing a product and selling it with the same brand name then he must get the dealership license from the Legal Metrology Department. The Dealership registration shall be granted by the central/state government where the company is registered. kept for use in any transaction or for protection unless it has been verified & stamped that too by a licensed manufacturer/dealer of Legal Metrology Officer.

BIS Registration Essential

Legal Requirement: BIS registration is mandatory for certain product categories in India. Selling products without the BIS certification can lead to legal consequences, including product confiscation and fines. It is essential to check the specific product categories that require BIS registration to ensure compliance. Quality Assurance: BIS registration ensures that the product meets defined quality and safety standards. This can enhance the product’s reputation, boost consumer confidence, and ultimately lead to increased sales. Consumer Safety: Many products covered by BIS standards are directly related to consumer safety, such as electrical appliances, toys, and automotive parts. BIS registration helps in preventing substandard or dangerous products from entering the market. Global Acceptance: BIS registration is recognized globally, making it easier to export Indian products to other countries. It is often a requirement for international trade.

How to Obtain BIS Registration?

The first step is to determine the applicable BIS standard for your product. These standards cover a wide range of products, from electronics to food items. Prepare Technical Documentation: You need to gather technical documentation related to your product, including design specifications, test reports, and quality control measures. Your product must undergo testing in a BIS-recognized laboratory to ensure compliance with the specified standard. If the product passes all tests, you can apply for BIS certification. Submit the application, along with the required documents and fees, to the BIS office. Ensure that all documentation is accurate and complete to expedite the process. BIS may conduct on-site inspections to verify the quality control measures you have in place. Once your product is in compliance with the relevant standards, BIS will issue the certification, which is valid for a specific duration. Regular surveillance audits may be conducted to ensure continued compliance.
